Many RV owners choose to pack up shop once the cold hits. But, some of us like to operate our mobile homes all year-round and there are plenty of trailer parks in Kamloops, BC that stay open well into the winter months. Sunnyside Heights RV and Motorhome Park and Kamloops RV Park are two sites that provide the ultimate winter getaway for those who enjoy the great outdoors. Sunnyside Heights RV and Motorhome Park has 12 RV sites within city limits, and winterized RV sites available for any time of the year and is located just minutes from some of the best shopping, restaurants and RV services in Kamloops. A little bit further, at 18 kilometres from the city centre, you’ll find Kamloops RV Park, offering 82 full hookup sites with plenty of amenities like hot showers, a laundromat, a convenience store and even WiFi! When you have the winter basics inside of your RV like appropriate heating, a nice cooking stove and a cozy bed to climb into, a winter adventure in your motorhome can be almost magical.

Get to Know Mother Nature at Kamloops RV Park

The Kamloops RV Park is located right beside the BC Wildlife Park where you’ll find more species diversity than any other province in Canada. In the winter months, you might be lucky enough to see a moose or an owl, and even a grizzly bear, timber wolf, or Arctic Fox (we’re not sure if you’d call that luck though)! The park attracts nature enthusiasts from all over the world and is a great place to go for a walk and take in the vast biodiversity. Kamloops RV Park also has its own hiking and mountain biking trails which are beautiful in the winter. Hitch your ATV on the back of your RV and enjoy an off-road ride down the trails, or spend the day ice fishing at one of the 100+ fishing lakes, all located within an hour’s drive from the RV grounds.

Escape the City at Sunnyside Heights RV and Motorhome Park

If you’re looking to get out of the big city, but still be within its limits (glampers, we’re looking at you), Sunnyside Heights provides the perfect spot. If you get too cold, or you need to run into town for some extra supplies, you won’t stress out about being too isolated. Sunnyside Heights offers heated washrooms, showers and laundry all year round, as well as cable TV and WiFi if you miss the comforts of home. The site is a 30-minute drive from the Lac du Bois Grasslands Protected Area, where you’ll find vast grasslands, spectacular cliffs and canyons, cool, dry forests, secret ponds and small lakes. If there’s snow, you may not see the grass, but you can still take in the scenic beauty of the cliffs and forests. This area is the only place in western North America that you’ll find such a diverse grassland community in such close proximity to each other. The hills are generally much cooler than below in the valleys, so if you choose to hike, make sure you bundle up!

What Should You Pack?

If you plan on spending a few days at a winterized RV site, you should treat it like any trip and bring everything you need to be comfortable. Basic essentials like food and water, warm clothes (don’t forget the extra socks), personal hygiene items and cooking supplies are a good start. In the winter, staying warm is perhaps the biggest concern. Although many sites provide electricity and hot water, you should never count on this as absolute. There’s no telling if a winter storm or power surge could take place, so it’s important that you come prepared. We recommend bringing an extra portable heater or backup generator just in case you lose power so you can remain comfortable and not make a hasty exit towards those city lights. It’s also a great idea to bring wood and appropriate materials like matches or an axe if you plan on having a campfire, a well as an emergency kit which includes everything from first aid materials like bandages to a flashlight to see in the dark.
