The Top 10 Questions From New RV Owners

Confused woman

If you’ve never owned an RV or motorhome before, you’re probably wondering how everything works.

Too often, new RV buyers assume an RV is just one big luxury tent with a roof, but it’s more complicated than that! For starters, your RV has electricity and plumbing, which means you should know a thing or two about how those systems intersect and connect. Then, you’ll need to know how to keep your RV tidy, how to hook it up to a campsite, and so on.

To make things easier for the summer, we’ve rounded up the top 10 most frequently asked questions that we get from new RV owners.

Here they are:

#1: Should we rent or buy?

There’s a simple solution for this. How often do you plan on using the RV, and what are you expecting to get out of it? If you only plan on using it once a year for that big family get-together, then you should probably rent. But, if you’re excited about the idea of taking multiple trips in the great outdoors, then buying isn’t out of the question. If it’s the price you’re worried about, South Thompson RV has plenty of high-quality pre-owned RVs that are sure to fit your budget. We also have custom financing options that make monthly payments a breeze.

#2: Do you need to reserve a campsite?

It’s highly recommended, especially during peak season, which is June through August. If you don’t call ahead and book a reservation, you might get lucky, but the chances are, you’ll get stuck with a hook-up that doesn’t include electricity or you’ll be crowded in with other RV-goers.

#3: Can we do a big road trip right away?

We don’t recommend it. Driving an RV is nothing like driving a car or a truck. You’re pulling a lot of extra weight and it takes some getting used to. We recommend planning a short day outing first, nothing that exceeds three to four hours, before you decide to trek across British Columbia.

#4: Where can I store my new RV?

RV storage is crucial to preserving its appearance and performance. While it’s okay to leave it outdoors in the warm summer months, once fall comes, you’ll need to winterize your RV and store it somewhere that doesn’t expose it to the elements. If it fits in your garage, you can store it there. If you don’t have a garage, or there’s no room, there are plenty of local storages in the area that will let you keep it there for the winter.

#5: How do I drain the waste tank?

Most people try and pretend that this isn’t a factor in owning an RV, but the truth is, you’ll have to deal with your waste tank eventually! Luckily, drainage is quick and easy and can often be done right at your campsite--just be respectful about it and don’t do it close to your neighbours!

#6: How do you know which RV to buy?

It all comes down to personal preference. First, you’ll need to know how many occupants plan on being in the RV. if you’re only ever going to have one or two people, you could easily have fun in a compact travel trailer, like the 2017 R-Pod series. But, if you’re looking for something that resembles a home-away-from-home on wheels and fits more than five individuals, a luxury model like the 2017 and 2018 Wildwood series will be your best bet.

#7: Can I attach it to my car?

It really depends. This handy towing compatibility guide can help you out, but generally speaking, a tiny compact car isn’t going to do the job. Most RVs or motorhomes are in excess of the 3,500 towing capacity that’s standard on most new vehicles. If you have access to a pick-up truck or SUV, those are better suited for towing. Contact South Thompson Rv to be sure!

#8: Where do you put everything?

RV living is all about living simply. By no means are we saying you need to rough it, but you do need to learn how to make the most out of smaller cargo space. There are plenty of new RVs that give you a ton of space, especially the Cedar Creek models, which are essentially mini cottages! Having enough space all comes down to packing only the essentials, and not getting carried away.

#9: What do you do for fun if it rains?

While you might not be able to eat any marshmallows, there’s plenty of fun to be had from the inside of your new RV. All new models come packed with entertainment systems and cozy living spaces, so you and your family or friends can relax indoors until the rain lets up.

#10: Can we bring the dog?

Of course you can! All of our RVs are pet-friendly. Just make sure that the campground you book is, too. Some parks don’t allow pets so you should always double-check before you hit the road. And, should you choose to bring your dog, be respectful and clean up after it as you would at home.
